Stepping onto the crafting trail for the first time is incredibly exciting, but it’s easy to get overwhelmed by aisles full of supplies. You don’t need a crowded burrow to make beautiful things! Today, we are packing your essential toolkit with the only 5 tools you truly need to start creating stunning handmade cards from scratch. Let’s get your gear ready…
Grab your map, clear off your workspace, and let’s look at the absolute essentials for your pack:
- Paper (Cardstock & Patterned Paper): Your foundation. Heavyweight cardstock (usually 80lb to 110lb) gives your cards a crisp, professional fold that won’t flop. Beautiful patterned paper can be your background layer or focal point, providing a ready-made canvas that brings the whole card together fast.
- Stamps: The personality. Clear or red-rubber stamps let you add sentiments, flowers, and fun designs in seconds. (Hint: You will want a clear acrylic block to mount your stamps on!)
- Ink: The color. A versatile, fast-drying pigment or dye ink pad brings your stamps to life on the page. Use your paper choices to help you decide on a matching color palette.
- Adhesive: The glue. Tape runners, liquid glue, or foam dimensionals hold your layers together. Foam dimensionals are fantastic because they instantly pop elements up for a fun 3D effect!
- Paper Trimmer or Scissors: The cut. A good paper trimmer gives you straight, clean lines, while sharp detail scissors handle fussy-cutting. Look for a trimmer that includes both a cutting blade and a scoring blade, which makes cutting and folding your card bases an absolute breeze.
Start with these basics, let your creativity take over, and build your stash as you fall in love with the craft!
Until our next stop on the trail,
Happy exploring,
